Holiday Reading Room SANTA CLAUS FUNNIES "Ticky Tack the Littlest Reindeer"

You know all about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer...
...but I'd bet you've never even heard of this guy!
This story from Dell's Four Color #205 (1948) aka Santa Claus Funnies, is an original tale by writer/artist Walt (Pogo) Kelly, who mostly did adaptations of stories modified to fit the Christmas season or straignt-out re-tellings like tomorrow's "Night Before Christmas".
There have been other "Littlest Reindeer" tales, but none with this particular plot or characters (besides Santa and the rest of the classic reindeer, of course!)!

Holiday Reading Room CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "Miss Cross Patch on Christmas Eve"

Unlike the Goldilocks story, which adapted a fairy tale into a Christmas setting...
...but a nursery rhyme, greatly expanded and enhanced by Walt (Pogo) Kelly!

Holiday Reading Room CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL "Twas the Night Before Christmas and All Though the House..."

It's a pretty long title for a one-pager...
...but the pay-off makes it worthwhile.
The writer and artist for this piece from the one-shot anthology Christmas Carnival (published by Ziff-Davis in 1952 and reprinted by St John in 1955) are, sadly, unknown.
But we didn't want this piece, unseen for 61 years, to be forgotten, so here it is for your enjoyment!

Holiday Reading Room: CHRISTMAS WITH MOTHER GOOSE "3 Christmas Bears"

A Christmas-themed variation on a classic fairy tale...
...as told by Walt (Pogo) Kelly!
Told with charm and finesse, this never-reprinted tale from Dell's Four Color #253 (1949) aka Christmas with Mother Goose, was one of a number of already-existing stories Kelly wittily-modified to fit the Yuletide season.

Holiday Reading Room TREASURE CHEST "Father Kiernan Tells About Christmas Customs in Other Lands"

Here's a rarely-seen Christmas piece...
...from the little-known and never-reprinted comic series Treasure Chest, only available by subscription in Catholic schools.
The Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact was a comic published bi-weekly during the school year (September thru June) and distributed to Catholic churches and schools from 1946 to 1966, featuring wholesome stories about historical, scientific, and sports subjects, adaptations of famous fictional works, and a number of original series.
Many well-known Golden and Silver Age creators contributed work to the title including Joe Sinnott, Reed Crandall, Jim Mooney, Graham Ingels, Bernard Bailey, Bob Powell, Fran Matera, and Frank Borth.
It became a year-round bi-weekly from 1966 to 1968, then reverting to school-year only until it's cancellation in 1972.
This particular story, written by George S Foley and illustrated by an unknown artist appeared in Vol 2 #9 (Dec. 24, 1946).
